"No triggers were used on this recording" is the bold statement of intent on this very professionally produced CD from this Dutch band, as if somehow signaling their purity to the cause: no cheating, gimmicks, or soft options. With four tracks of vicious, loud as fuck, nasty, hate-filled black metal slammed down your throat. The playing is tight and goes for the kill in a very convincing manner. A band ripe for signing.

J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings was the hype of the last year. SAURON is a name which has been borrowed from that bestselling story. But do not think that SAURON is a band that is following trends. I warned you. This Dutch Black Metal quartet takes no prisoners! No compromises! Their previous release was entitled Death... Tyranny... War... Blasphemy.... Their old logo has been replaced by a piece of vile word art of the penguin-killer Szpajdel, with a nice dragon-icon S. This brings us back to the meaning of PURE Black Metal: aggressive, extreme, hateful, anti-Christian, misanthropic ("Humanity is a disease...We are the Cure"), raging, scraping Black screams; fast, raw, harsh guitars, fast drums (including some double-bass drumming). No keyboards, no female vocals. This piece of stereotypical Black Metal art is complete with corpse paint and weapons. The aggression brings about a comparison to MARDUK. The track Call to War appeared on the first compilation CD-R of THE THRONE OF ABSENCE. To conclude, this is Black Metal we all like it most. In the meantime SAURON is preparing their next battlefact. This is very likely the best Dutch Black Metal band!

"Humanity is a disease… We are the cure"… Nihilistic black metal is what they call it themselves, and personally I find this a pretty well-found entitlement: everything about this m-cd breathes forth a hate towards mankind and the destruction of life on earth. Raw and cruel riffs are being fired at you, accompanied by good high-speed drumming (especially concerning this drummer has only one hand). Although Sauron is most of all a furious black metal band of which you don't have to expect that they make use of female vocals or keys, they also throw in some 'misanthropic' and dramatic melody at times which throws over the mood of the song, not only blastbeats, but also nice up-tempo speeds and musically it also contains enough variation to keep it interesting. The use of a scream lead-vocal combined with a backing-grunt sounds pretty cool and is a nice addition to their music. Still these guys aren't in for most original band but they do bring you four tight played ferocious black metal tracks with a cold sphere around it which just sound pretty good and contain certain memorable parts. If you're into pure and aggressive black metal, check this one out!

"Humanity is a disease - we are the cure!" Mit diesem Leitspruch starteten SAURON anno 2000 ihre Karriere mit dem ersten Demo "True Hate Embodiment" und legten damit den gesamten niederländischen Underground in Schutt und Asche. Ich erinnere mich noch gut an den Moment, an den ich mir diese Scheibe für damals 5 DM auf einem Metalmarket in Geleen/NL zulegte, sie zunächst gar nicht so beachtete und anschließend, als ich mich zum ersten Mal so richtig intensiv mit ihr auseinandersetzte, total von ihr weggeblasen wurde.

"CALL TO WAR!!!" schallt es einem da zu Beginn in voller Lautstärke entgegen und nach diesem eröffnenden Schrei legen die Holländer los wie die Feuerwehr und leiten ein furioses Knüppel-Thrash/Black-Metal-Feuerwerk der feinsten Machart ein. Ja, ich weiß, es ist eine sehr hoch gegriffene Behauptung, doch alleine mit diesem ersten Track lassen SAURON den Großteil der internationalen Konkurrenz, Szenegrößen wie DARK FUNERAL und DESTRÖYER 666 mit eingeschlossen, am ausgestreckten Arm vertrocknen. Gnadenlos sägende Gitarren, die im Eiltempo voranpreschenden Drums und diese geilen Breaks machen diesen Song zu einer meiner Top-5-Thrash-Kompositionen aller Zeiten und ich bin mir sicher, dass viele Leute diese Meinung spätestens dann mit mir teilen werden, wenn Frontmann Eclipse in der Mitte laut herausschreit "...and we will call to fucking WAR!!!". Gänsehaut für alle Freunde der infernalischen Musik.

Nicht minder kompromisslos geht es dann mit dem Titelsong weiter, der sogar noch ein Stück bedrohlicher daherkommt, dafür aber auch Platz für unterschwellig versteckte Melodien lässt. Bei `Earth To Ash, Sy To Dust´ wird dann wieder die sechssaitige Säge ausgepackt, die gerade an den Stellen, wo sie nach einem Break spannungsvoll einen neuen Abschnitt einleitet, so richtig geil kommt.
`Infernal Victory´ - passender hätte man den letzten Track wohl nicht benennen können, denn SAURON sind gekommen und haben in nicht einmal einer Viertelstunde in jeglicher Hinsicht gesiegt. Ich bin wirklich ein großer Anhänger der niederländischen Extrem-Metal-Szene und schätze besonders Bands wie GOD DETHRONED, OCCULT und SINISTER, aber, und das ist ja gerade das Verwunderliche an diesem frühen Demo, gegen eine Gruppe wie SAURON ist meiner Meinung nach selbst Hollands Brutalo-Elite machtlos. Deshalb befehle ich jedem einzelnen, der auch nur ein wenig mit brutalem Black/Thrash Metal anfangen kann, die Band ganz schnell auf ihrer Homepage zu besuchen und diese Underground-Perle zu ordern.
