Sporting suitably anti-Christian artwork resplendent with apocalyptic etchings and band members spattered with filthy corpsepaint, it's clear from the off that we're going to be dealing with some pretty serious black metal along the lines of recently popular uber-satanists like Watain, Deathspell Omega and Funeral Mist. Thanks to the relentless quality of the releases emanating primarily from the NED stable, this sort of stuff is really starting to make wakes in the upper echelons of the underground - hell, even Marduk have abandoned the cartoonish nonsense of their 'tanks & fat blokes'
approach in favour of far more orthodox satanic imagery. It seems therefore that the new wave of 'serious' black metal is very much on the march.
Luckily for Sauron, the music contained on 'For a Dead Race' is more than capable of standing shoulder-to-shoulder with this fast-rising blasphemic big league.
Riffs are the key factor here, and Sauron have plenty of them. From head-removing passages of blastbeat-laden spite to slower, sicker moments, the quality and quantity of the band's riff-writing is undeniable. In addition, the band let no part outstay its welcome and are quite happy to move swiftly from one riff to another without returning to it further down the line. This makes for interesting and unusual song structures, unpredictable yet concise slices of blackened malice. Sonically, Watain are
the closest reference point, due in no small part to the fact that vocalist Eclipse is a dead ringer for Erik. The snaking song structures and riff-based writing are also reminiscent of the Swedish crew but Sauron manage to put their own stamp on proceedings. Theirs is a darker, denser approach with the emphasis more on discordant violence than searing lead riffs.
In summary, 'For a Dead Race' is a good indicator of the state of black metal in 2004/2005. For all the supposed 'evolution', the Norwegian 'weirding' of the late Nineties, symphonic vampire claptrap, stylistic cross-pollination and general silliness that the genre has endured throughout it's existence, it seems that the leading bands these days are more and more extolling the virtues of the purity of the style and have gone back to the black as it were. With all pretentiousness removed and artistic
aspirations no more high-brow than creating the darkest, most malevolent metal imaginable, bands like Sauron have rediscovered that in many ways, less can be so much more. 'For a Dead Race' is ample proof that 'true' black metal is back with a vengeance. Wimps and posers are cordially invited to leave the hall.

Sauron has unleashed another plague upon mankind in order to exterminate every living creature on this planet. Roughly about 18 months after their debut album "Universe Of Filth" they switched label and recorded their new material. The obscure title of this second album can also be read as to whom it's addressed to, something Sauron is familiar for…
"For A Dead Race" differs from Sauron's previous work in several ways. The music has gotten sicker, grimmer and even more vile. The vocal patterns are done even darker and this time it's only Eclipse that takes care of all the vomiting. Also the music has undergone some changes for the better. First of all the music has gotten a colder and darker sphere, more towards the filthy Scandinavian black metal, sort of speak. Also, the music contains more variation compared to their "Universe Of Filth" album. Especially concerning alterations in speed, so expect some nihilistic, hypnotising battering but this time with more slowed down parts, dragging paces and up-speed beatings. The depressive undertone has remained and exploited somewhat better this time. I mean, the music sounds more alive (or should I say undead?) and because of this Sauron's music is easier to get attachted to. Brutal yet depressive (and more extended) riffs guided by melancholic guitar lines lead you through this album, while another red line is (once again) the hatred that almost literally drips from your speakers.
This time the album didn't get a powerful and clear and polished production as with "Universe" was more the case, but more of a raw, granular, dark and cold production that suits the music better (and suits black metal better in general) and gives the music more dynamics and depth.
Tight and terrifying Sauron executes eight fierce tracks in which the growth of the band as writers and mucisians is shown and which show a war machine at full strength, ready to destroy. "For A Dead Race" is very good follow up album that will take Sauron a few steps up within the extreme scene and that will also take them a few steps down towards the burning pits. Blackened ones need to check this one out now!

Dutch Black Metallers Sauron return with their sophomore full-length album, their first for Neurotic Records and it has become a violent kick in the face of mankind. When the opening song kicks in, it's clear this four-piece is still a band of the violent sort. Crushingly fast, although they do take back some gas here and there. On their previous recordings it was full speed ahead all the time but with some more variation in tempo "For a Dead Race" has become a bit more mature overall. Based on this album I can easily say that Sauron has become one of the leading bands in Holland which is not exactly difficult I have to say because there aren't many black metal bands active on this level. The overall production is decent although I have one major point of criticism, being the sound of the snare drum in the blast parts. It's a matter of taste I guess but I would have preferred the piccolo sound you hear most of the time by bands using blast beats. Then again I have to be extremely positive about the arrangements. I especially like the way bass player Demster fill in all the gaps with his interest parts. This is very well done and a joy to listen to. Other than that this is just a good black metal album from Dutch soil.

SauroN gefeliciteerd! Soms heb je wel eens van die albums waar je met smart op zit te wachtten. "For a dead race" is een schijfje dat bij mij onder deze categorie viel. De band maakte met haar vorige release "Universe of Filth" (2003) zo'n goede indruk op mij dat ik zelfs zenuwachtig werd toen ik de nieuwe cd een eerste luisterbeurt gunde. Gelukkig konden de eerste tonen van dit album mij op mijn gemak stellen: SauroN flikt het gewoon weer, maar dit keer nog veel beter.
De band maakte met hun voorgaande release "Universe of filth" dus al een zeer goede indruk op mij, maar wat de band op deze cd laat horen is een klasse apart. Acht nummers lang razernij in haar puurste vorm. "For a dead race" is niet gewoon een cd, nee het is een ervaring. In vergelijking met de voorgaande release is de band er zeker niet op achteruit gegaan. Waar "Universe of Filth" soms nog wat te helder klonk, is de productie op deze schijf precies goed. Smerig van de eerste tot en met de laatste seconde. Dit past veel beter bij de nummers. Snelheid ("Prey To Destruction"), ziekelijkheid ("The Pestilencial March") en bovenal haat ("For A Dead Race") worden op ongekende brute wijze samengesmolten. Verder vinden we op "For a dead race" wat meer variatie tussen de nummers onderling in de vorm van tempowisselingen. Deze cd bevat niet enkele knallers maar uitsluitend steengoede nummers. Ik heb de cd sinds dat ik hem heb liggen al zeker 20 keer gedraaid en nog steeds krijg ik er kippenvel van. Zelfs het artwork is ronduit perfect. De haat druipt bijna letterlijk van de teksten af. Het booklet is opgesierd met wat kadavers, alles klopt gewoon. Ik zou nog wel drie alinea's kunnen voltypen over de klasse van "For a dead race" maar ik denk niet dat dat nodig is. Daarom wilde ik mijn lof hier maar bij laten.
In het interview dat ik eerder dit jaar had met de band vroeg ik naar hun mening over het feit dat veel mensen SauroN beschouwen als de beste vaderlandse blackmetal band. De band bleef ons toen het antwoord schuldig. Met "For a dead race" hebben de heren dan toch een keihard antwoord gegeven: SauroN is de beste Nederlandse band in haar genre en "For a dead race" is een meesterwerk!

Sauron begon in 1997 met de intentie om de rauwste en snelste Black Metal band van Nederland te worden en na hun mini cd 'True Hate Embodiment' en het debuut 'Universe Of Filth' welke allebei goed ontvangen werden en de heren van de nodige optredens met prominente namen als Satyricon, Khold en Carpathian Forest voorzag, is het nu in 2004 tijd voor het tweede full length wapenfeit 'For A Dead Race', de eerste Sauron release sinds de overstap naar Neurotic Records. Ik ben, op een paar bands na, niet wild van de Nederlandse Black Metal scene, maar Sauron behoort zonder twijfel tot de top en niet alleen binnen onze grenzen. Qua rauwheid zijn ze er absoluut in geslaagd om hun doel na te streven en daarbij straalt de agressie er vanaf. Lekkere, zieke, open riffs die voor dat typische primitieve geluid zorgen en varierend van blast-snelheden tot slepende, misselijkmakende tempo's weet Sauron acht nummers lang de aandacht vast te houden. Een pakkend werkje van deze landgenoten dat zeker niet overgeslagen moet worden.

Sauron heeft zoals altijd weer het beste met de mensheid voor. Ook de nieuwe cd For A Dead Race is weer een propagandaronde om het menselijk ras met wortel en al volledig uit te roeien.
Sauron wordt wel vaker de Nederlandse Marduk genoemd. Dit is een vergelijking die op de zeer snelle blastpartijen van beide bands na niet echt opgaat vind ik. Sauron is een stuk smeriger namelijk dan Marduk. Men kan denk ik bij vele nummers een vergelijking met Darkthrone trekken, Sauron zet deels een duistere atmosfeer neer die meer dan eens aan A Blaze in the Nothern Sky doet denken. Echter knuppelt drummer Ludas over het algemeen op een veel hoger tempo dan Fenriz en lijkt zanger/gitarist Eclipse nog wat hysterischer te schreeuwen dan Nocturno Culto. Wat wellicht nog wel een punt van vergelijking is met de collega's van Marduk is dat Sauron met een teksten ook wel vaker op het randje balanceert. Men kan zich voorstellen dat menig politiek correcte ziel zich stoort aan stukken tekst zoals: "Gasses for the Masses, the final Solution for depopulation."
Bij Sauron waant de luisteraar zich midden in een lijkenveld waar hij van alle kanten beschoten wordt en zich een weg door de rottende kadavers moet banen, half verzuipend in een drab van modder, bloed en pus (als men de promotiefoto's van de band ziet is dit denk ik een voorstelbaar beeld). Het extra zieke effect wordt mede verzorgd door bassist Demster die ook bij de doomband Bunkur bijklust. Zijn Abruptum-achtige schreeuwen klinken als pure wanhoop en pure uitingen van een doodsstrijd.
Mede aan deze smerigheid van For a dead race draagt de sound van de plaat bij. Alle instrumenten zijn goed van elkaar te onderscheiden, maar toch is de productie niet helder waardoor het old-school gevoel toch blijft hangen en voor de nodige atmosfeer gezorgd wordt. Enige minpunt vind ik hierbij de snaredrum, deze klinkt namelijk als een blikken emmer. In het begin stoort het namelijk nogal dat zo'n schelle drum (die je normaal alleen bij oldschool death metal of grind tegenkomt) boven een vrij necro productie uitsteekt.
Waar je bij Marduk het gevoel hebt dat door een moderne, wild in het rond schietende tank platgewalst wordt, denk je bij Sauron aan een oude ietwat roestige tank, waar liters opgedroogd bloed aan zitten die met extreme bruutheid over een slagveld vol met rottend vlees een spoor van vernietiging achter laat. Voor iedereen die de mensheid veracht of over een flinke dosis macabere humor beschikt en van rossende doch sfeervolle black metal houdt is deze plaat een absolute aanrader.

Für das Entschlüsseln des Schriftzuges dieser holländischen Truppe braucht man in etwa so lange, wie der Longplayer durch die CD-Schüssel läuft, nämlich gut 35 Minuten. Die megafies geschminkten 4 Tulpenhacker haben die Musik Satan sei Dank nicht so komplex gestaltet, schon nach 30 Sekunden peilt man, dass die Vorliebe von Klampfer/Kreischer Eclipse und seinen Mitstreitern beim altschuligen Black Metal vorwiegend norwegischer Bauart liegt, der dann und wann auch gerne durch saftiges Gethrashe aufgelockert wird. Von ultrablastig bis schleppend wüten sich die Burschen durch alle 8 Nummern und variieren die Tempi immer wieder, ohne dabei aber komplex zu sein. Der Bass darf, im Gegensatz zu vielen norwegischen Vorbildern auch mal vernehmlicher grummeln, ansonsten ist alles so polterig wie bei den Vorfahren, die da heißen können alte Immortal, Fimbulwinter oder frühe Obtained Enslavement. Für Black Metal-Traditionalisten ganz okay und eine knappe 9 wert, da zwar solide angeschwärzt wird, die alles überragende Hymne aber wie so oft nicht am Start ist.

Richard G.: Kwalitatief hoogstaande, echte black metal, dat is waar de Nederlanders van SauroN in een notendop voor staan. Dat en pure haat van het menselijke ras. Wanneer deze twee elementen gecombineerd worden dan krijg je een ijzingwekkende release als 'For A Dead Race'. Black metal zoals veel puristen willen dat het gemaakt wordt, maar dan zonder de stofzuigerproductie, wat veel andere black adepten weer zal aanspreken. Acht nummers lang hatelijke riffs, hoge tempo's en overtuigend angstaanjagende vocalen met op de juiste momenten rustpunten ingebouwd zodat het niet gaat vervelen en geen onbehapbare brok agressie en haat wordt. Was je nog geen misantroop, dan word je het wel na het beluisteren van deze schijf.

Met de voorganger 'Universe of Filth' katapulteerde Sauron zich vorig jaar meteen naar de top van de Nederlandse black metalscene. 'For a dead race' bewijst dat de vorige cd geen toevalstreffer was. De ietwat rauwe en primitieve sound geeft het schijfje meer een underground-gevoel, en hoewel ik 'Universe of Filth' qua geluid iets meer vond knallen, is de muziek er beslist niet minder om. De rauwe, grimmige black metal heeft door het overwegend hoge tempo wel wat raakvlakken met Marduk, maar het gave aan Sauron is dat het vocaal af en toe behoorlijk 'over the top' durft te gaan, waardoor het geheel wat levendiger klinkt. Luister bijvoorbeeld maar eens naar "Anima Mundi". Sauron is gewoon een van de beste en meest agressieve black metalbands van Nederland en het is te hopen dat de band met behulp van Neurotic Records een stuk verder kan komen.

De rij bands die zich bij het zoeken naar een naam te buiten ging aan plagiaat op "Lord Of The Rings" is inmiddels eindeloos, maar af en toe zit er wel een toepasselijk geval tussen dat we vergeven. Het Tilburgse Sauron 'doopte' zich namelijk naar de kwaadaardige heerser die de hele fantasiewereld van de Hobbits op zijn kop zette en da's vrij gepast voor dit viertal beeldenstormers, want zij komen evenmin met vreedzame bedoelingen. 'Wreed'-zame bedoelingen daarentegen… "For A Dead Race" is namelijk een van lijkenlucht doortrokken schijf die nergens ruimte laat voor optimistische melodietjes en keyboardgepriegel, maar eerder het muzikale equivalent is van een vlijmscherp jachtmes, dat je anus wordt ingeramd en met één ruk tot aan je strot de hele zooi openhaalt. Geen pretje? Wacht maar tot je "For A Dead Race" gehoord hebt, dan zal je deze vergelijking pas begrijpen. Daar gaat de gemeenplaats als zouden alle Zuid-Brabanders lolbroeken zijn, dit is dodelijke black metal die zuur in plaats van zout in je wonden strooit en er nog verdomd veel sadistisch genoegen aan beleeft ook. Fans van Darkthrone of Carpathian Forest zullen dit zeker waarderen, dat staat vast. Oh, nog een opmerking omtrent de sound: "For A Dead Race" bewijst dat een undergroundplaat wel degelijk goed kan klinken, ook al zit er geen peperdure productie aan vast en bleven de ruwe kantjes behouden.

Although there are lots of bands with this name we're now talking about the nearly unknown dutch band Sauron, performing a ravaging and aggressive black metal in the line of the first Mayhem. Powerful sound is the best way to describe this music, much more condensed than the one from Dark Throne but as grim and harsh as the Norwegian band. Vocals are great, the perfect combination between the shrieky and grunty, really harsh. With a great technic in the guitars, not abusing of the repetitive riffing and a semi-crystaline distortion sometimes gives this band an aim to reach the perfect darkness environement evolving the music. This ends in a correct production in the middle of the one close to bands such as Zyklon without losing the grim sound of the like of the black metal purists. On the whole, this is a release that will enjoy misanthrope purists and more newbies into black metal.
Great sound filled with hateful riffing, high tempos and convincingly evil vocals with moments of rest at just the right times so that it does not get boring and that it does not become too much for you. Good album indeed.

Het moest killer en kouder. En vooral: minder commercieel. Voorgaande releases True Hate Embodiment en Universe Of Filth van de Tilburgse blackmetalband Sauron richtten zich al niet op een breed publiek. Met For A Dead Race wordt nog een stap verder in het duister gedaan. De productie is gruizig en grimmig en de acht nummers die nog het meeste doen denken aan Marduk en Darkthrone in hun vroegere dagen, razen op hoge snelheid voorbij. En als er dan een stapje terug wordt gedaan in snelheid, hakken kreten als every heartbeat on the globe, is like a bullet to my flesh en for what is life without the joy of suffering elke vorm van subtiliteit aan flarden. For A Dead Race is messcherp, uiterst onvriendelijk en vooral zwart als de nacht.

Sauron - For a dead race
Na verschillende demo's, een mini cd, een 7" en een full length voor het Amerikaanse Dark Horizon label heeft Sauron nu een plaats gevonden op het Neurotic Records label uit Nederland. Een flinke omweg, maar het voorlopige eindpunt mag er wezen: gevarieerde old school black metal van hoge kwaliteit. Waar tegenwoordig veel bands in het genre krampachtig proberen hun sound te moderniseren bewijst Sauron dat, als je het goed doet, black metal nog zeer zeker een levensvatbaar genre is.
Opvallend is de wat dunne sound die veel lijkt op hoe bands als Satyricon en Emperor vroeger klonken. Ik klink als een ouwe lul als ik er 'in de goeie ouwe tijd' bij zou zeggen, maar het is wel waar. Ondanks de vrij nette productie klinkt For A Dead Race vuig en gemeen. En zoals het een dergelijke band betaamt, wordt in de teksten aan de gehele mensheid de oorlog verklaard. Overigens spelen alle bandleden in allerlei andere bands waarvan FleshMadeSin en Fluisterwoud de bekendste zijn. Fijn plaatje.

After the mini-album "True Hate Embodiment", (and debut album Universe of Filth - L.) "For A Dead Race" is the first (second-L.) official recording by the Dutch formation Sauron. And all right, the band’s moniker may not be original at all (nevertheless it exhales perfectly the atmosphere of the recording, because the Dark Ruler Sauron from the Tolkien-trilogy is as evil as this band, I guess; or is this band as malicious as the Lord of the Ultimate Ring?). In fact, I guess that, if Tolkien’s Sauron would have his own minstrels, they would sound like this formation! Anyway, the album has duration of 35 minutes and was recorded at the Double Noise Studio by members Sunless (g), Demster (b), Eclipse (v, g) and Ludas (d). "For A Dead Race" stands for extremely evil, primitive and underground-sounding Black Metal, mainly fast and deadly, with an atmosphere that exhales the purest malignancy and misanthropy. Within the songs, some subtle Post-Black influences (Meridian, Panchrysia) are weaven, and also some doomier parts (like "Anima Mundi" or "The Pestilential March" for example) intersperse the bloody and blasting terror. From time to time I must also think about bands or formations as Darkthrone, Carpathian Forest, Darkness Enshroud, Szron, Khold ("Anima Mundi"), Summon, Judas Iscariot or Tulus, so this may be somewhat an indication of what to expect from this band. And maybe they are not as ‘great’ as higher mentioned bands (yet), but I have to admit that their skills get near the superiority of those other cult-acts. I don’t care about you, I really don’t, but I like it and I hope they will record some new material soon!
